Move over FM, Internet Radio is here

dawn of a new day

The FM radio selection is so barren in my town, that I once seriously considered moving to Los Angeles just to have better access to a constant stream of new and exciting music to fuel my imagination. If you haven’t ever lived through the hell of driving in Los Angeles, the desperation of that thought can not be fully appreciated, but you’ve undoubtedly seen video footage of the ribbons of highway parking lot and heard about angst escalating to road rage shootings, so you may grasp some sense of the desperation that had seized me. Not that my city is much better on our more popular arteries at rush hour, but I digress.

I won’t dwell on the reasons why FM radio even in large media markets sucks. The wholesale sell-out and rape of the American airwaves is covered extensively elsewhere. Radio also sucks in LA and San Francisco, it just sucks less, as it is still possible to find brief refuge in the few remaining independent stations. These precious few islands of integrity and originality will remind you, as you're driving through or visiting a cosmopolitan city that the broadcast format can deliver a remarkable service. Just turn on the receiver and become elevated as the tasteful music and commentary of a smart, well-connected maverick dj flows into your ears, making introductions to new artists and feeding your hungry imagination with new ideas, new inspiration, new moods.
